At around eight years old, Idell's family left the deep South. They were very poor and searching for a better path. From Scott, Mississippi she journeyed north, carrying everything she needed within herself.

Chicago, Harvey & Michigan

1950s-1970s

Building a life in the North was not easy. The family moved between Chicago and Harvey, Illinois several times. As a young adult, Idell went to Michigan for a short period before returning. The cities tested her, but she was made of Mississippi iron.

1960s-1980s

Eleven children. Angie, April, Cortez, David, Kenneth, Kevie, Marcus, Nannete, Tony, Tyrone, and Wolf. Each one a world unto themselves, each one carrying a piece of Idell into the future. She raised them with whatever she had, and what she had was more than enough.

Home

1970s-2025

After moving between Chicago and Hammond, Hammond eventually became home. The place where grandchildren ran through the house, where holidays had their own rituals, where normal Tuesdays were sacred. This is where the family gathered, and where Idell's love filled every room.

Gerald & Later Years

A New Chapter

November 21, 1995

On November 21, 1995, Idell married Gerald Blakemore. Gerald became a stepfather to her children - a steady presence in the later chapters of her story. In her later decades, Idell became the version of herself that everyone will remember most. Softer in some ways, sharper in others - always unmistakably her.
